As employees of the University of Pécs Library and Knowledge Centre, regardless of gender, age, or position, we are all equally committed to the present and historically rooted values of the University of Pécs and its library network. At the same time, we believe that continuous changes, as a natural part of life, inspire us to continually renew ourselves, both as employees and as an organization.
We uphold that a successful organizational culture, which fosters a workplace environment where we enjoy working and can consider our second home, must be built on democratic, open communication, mutual personal respect and trust, a focus on shared organizational goals, transparent and consistently applied rules and practices that encourage innovation and knowledge development.
The central value of this organizational culture is the employee, who:
- Is open to following changes in user needs and professional challenges,
-Takes pride in their professional expertise while recognizing and enriching their own knowledge with that of others,
- Is capable of proactively changing and implementing change,
- Strives for consensus in resolving disputes and enhancing internal cooperation,
-Demonstrates through their personal attitude a commitment to consistently high-quality, reliable, professional library services that focus on the values of the University.
Based on all these, we, as citizens of the University of Pécs and as competent, professionally committed, and responsible employees of the University Library and Knowledge Center, uphold the values outlined in the "Code of Ethics for Hungarian Librarianship" and believe that the most important measure of our profession is individual and group performance, which we always recognize, encourage, and reward. As employees of the University Library and Knowledge Center, we believe that a human-focused, innovative, flexible, open, goal-oriented team with stable values based on the principles of individual and community integrity can be exceptionally successful in supporting the strategic goals and institutional mission of the University.
Strategic plan of the University of Pécs Library and Knowledge Centre 2023–2030 [PDF]
The University of Pécs Library and Knowledge Centre, through its role in the scientific information services of Pécs and the South Transdanubian region, is a key player in the human services of Hungarian higher education libraries. With its traditional and digital services, collections, local library network, and learning spaces that dynamically adapt to the ever-changing needs of the information society, as well as the expertise and service-oriented attitude of its well-prepared staff, the University Library and Knowledge Center of Pécs is a freely accessible source of accumulated scientific knowledge for everyone, serving as a "Link to Knowledge."
In line with the functions defined by law for higher education libraries, the University of Pécs Library and Knowledge Centre is the primary custodian, enriches, and provides access to the knowledge base created at the University of Pécs and its predecessor institutions. It is an essential foundational institution with a supportive role in the university's scientific research and educational infrastructure and is part of the national scientific library system. As a public library, it also considers itself a human service center for Pécs and the region, keeping in mind the institutional objectives related to the University's urban, regional, and international role. As the intellectual successor to the first large public library in Hungary, which opened its doors in 1774, and as part of Hungary's first university, it is bound by the past, present, and future of its parent institution. Accordingly, the University Library and Knowledge Center of Pécs, as a library network spanning multiple locations in South Transdanubia, considers its central task to be the provision of reliable scientific information to the University's faculty, researchers, students, staff, and the entire South Transdanubian region, as well as the related human services. To this end, it closely monitors the continuously changing user needs during the development of its services, responding dynamically and proactively with targeted, measurable quality and performance indicators, consciously incorporating national and international developments in library science into its activities.
To realize this general objective, the University of Pécs Library and Knowledge Centre – in alignment with the strategic goals of the University and the national sectoral strategies – formulates its strategic objectives for 2023–2030, defines their performance indicators, sets its organizational development goals, shapes its publication and research support, education and learning support, and collection management policies, develops its service portfolio, and builds its external and internal institutional communication. Our organizational development goal is to ensure that by the end of the strategic cycle, the employees of the University Library and Knowledge Center of Pécs can perform their work in an environment that promotes the development of professional knowledge, supports internal knowledge sharing and constructive criticism, and fosters open communication in a trustful atmosphere. The aim is to enhance the effectiveness of task performance within organizational frameworks and conditions, in a motivating environment.
In the field of research support, the University of Pécs Library and Knowledge Centre aims to be an indispensable player with a unique human service role within the university's "core facility" ecosystem that creates internal opportunities. In alignment with the University's strategic goals, as the unquestionable university competency center for "open science," its primary objective is to focus on the challenges of publication support, developing and continuously expanding a service portfolio that is relevant to the entire research career path at all stages of the research cycle and capable of measurably supporting the University's scientific output goals. Furthermore, it aims to coordinate the university's community scientific activities.
As the center of the University's scientific literature provision, the continuous development of the library's collection-building policy along the university's educational portfolio is essential for the conscious support of the university's educational and research goals. In this strategic cycle, in addition to content considerations, we place special emphasis on the sustainable development of our collection-building practices. We consider the physical and virtual spaces of the library network to be fundamental and indispensable foundations, responsibly preserved and further developed, that support the university's educational and research activities, especially the learning and success of students. We continuously develop the physical and IT infrastructure of these spaces, as well as our current and historical collections. We realize this by increasing the number and depth of collaborations relying on the national library system, by targeted development of library digitization, automation, and content services, outlined by the University's methodological renewal efforts, by consciously supporting the growing community needs of students, and by strengthening the University's image.
With the idea of information freedom in mind, and considering the University's efforts towards social inclusion, we see it as our key task during this strategic cycle to support the access to scientific information for students with disabilities and those from multiply disadvantaged regions. We aim to achieve our tasks by developing intra-university and inter-institutional collaborations, as well as by consciously and systematically using internal and external communication tools that increase access and usability of our content. Due to our responsibilities in carrying out our tasks, and our portfolio of museum and historical collections, we consider the cultivation of the University's memory to be a key task, building on the previous achievements of the University History Collection and the Department of Historical Collections. Libraries, as part of the digital ecosystem, can most prominently demonstrate a competitive advantage in the information market that overwhelms users by the credibility of their information.
Our goal is that during the strategic cycle, the University of Pécs Library and Knowledge Centre, using the scholarly apparatus and tools at its disposal, becomes a prominent expert in information credibility within the University's organization. As part of the "Library as a Trusted University Source" function, we also aim – in support of the University's third mission efforts – to promote the development of users' information literacy and critical attitude by preparing educational materials and teaching on research methodology and critical source analysis for university students. In connection with the information credibility crisis caused by the explosive spread of artificial intelligence, we aim to make the University Library and Knowledge Center of Pécs a trend analysis and information center on AI topics within the University by the end of the strategic cycle, based on our reliable information sources and experience. We support all our higher education and cultural tasks, as well as the support of university and societal "well-being," through the development, operation, and teaching of innovative content service tools and methods both within and outside the University. Our goal is that by the end of the strategic cycle up to 2030, the University Library and Knowledge Center of Pécs, while retaining its existing strengths, will be an organization that has been strengthened and renewed in its functions, internal mechanisms, and quality services, capable of effectively supporting the University's vision and strategic goals.
